Mystery Plant: Shady swamp dweller tempts with sensitive blooms | Home & Garden

This is a native species of southern bottomland forests, and it’s one of the showiest wildflowers a swamp can offer. It is an herb from thick, knotty roots, increasing on open mucky ground. It can naturally tolerate appreciable shade, as very well as waterlogged soils.

The leaves are narrow and sleek, and reverse — that is, two at a time — up and down the stem. When the stems are damaged, slender, milky fluid oozes from the wounds. The bouquets are rather classy and star-like, held in a dense cluster with all the flower’s stalks basically arising from a single point. (We connect with these a cluster an “umbel.”) Usually one particular or two clusters are current, occasionally three or far more.

Apparently, only a number of bouquets for every plant — frequently only one particular — will obtain thriving pollination and final fruit output. The fruit itself is a pod (basically called a “follicle”), slender and easy, pointed at equally ends, and hanging. This pod will ultimately break up open along one particular seam, releasing dark, marginally elliptical seeds.

Our Mystery Plant has a lot of simply recognized and nicely-recognized kinfolk, which also have milky fluid, and bouquets in umbels, but whose seeds are geared up with a fragile wispy parachute of extensive, silky hairs. It’s a little bit odd inside its group of family members in missing this parachute. You can come across our shady swamp lover along the Atlantic coastal simple from South Carolina to northern Florida, and west to the Mississippi River, as significantly north as southern Indiana.
