Comfortable residential structure

Texas ADA Home Remodeling helps homeowners age in place

Multiple surveys have found that, if possible, most people would prefer to continue living independently in their own homes as they age. A concept referred to as “aging in place.”
A study by AARP in 2018 found that 3 out of 4 adults age 50 and older want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. However, the survey also found that while 76% of Americans in that age group said they would prefer to remain in their current residence and 77% would like to live in their community as long as possible, only 59% anticipated they would be able to stay in their community.
Home modification is one issue that often needs to be addressed to make it possible for seniors to continue living in their own homes safely and comfortably. Certified Aging in Place Specialists at Texas ADA Home Remodeling help residents throughout the state transform their homes so they can age in place. Owner Arturo Valdez started his business almost 20 years ago because of his parents, now both in their late 80s. ” I started studying what it is to make their home more accessible and for them to stay in their own home,” he said. “They’re both in their house, and I’ve modified it for them, and they are comfortable living in their home.”
Widening doorways, installing grab bars, and modifying bathrooms are just a few of the services Texas ADA Home Remodeling offers.

Q: Are you finding that more people want to stay in their own homes as they get older?

A: Yes, we are. You would think that it would only be the elderly that are needing these types of modifications but, no. A lot of 40-year-olds are calling me and saying, ‘Hey, my parents are going to move in with me, and I need to modify to their standards so they can be here with us.’

Q: How has the building supply shortage impacted your business?

A: The pricing of the lumber has gone up. It’s gone up I think over 200 percent. It does impact the bottom line. Our pricing that we’ve given customers has gone up significantly to cover the costs of the materials. Not only that but the elevators that we install, they all come from China, they are manufactured there. And because they also take the chips that everybody is looking for, they are slowing demand also. So, the manufacturing of these units is impacting the timeframe when we install them. Right now, if somebody wanted an elevator, it’s taking six weeks to get the unit.

Q: I’ve seen those commercials for stair chair lifts, but you install actual elevators?

A: Yes, this is a new company that we are distributors/installers for. We cover from Waco all the way to the McAllen area. The name of that brand is called Stiltz. We have the franchise in this area, it’s called Stiltz of Southwest Texas. So, it is a lift (that is) like an elevator; there is a slight difference. In an elevator, you hit a button, and it takes you to wherever you’re going; these lifts, for safety reasons, you have to have your finger on the button and press it all the time as you go upstairs. It’s called a constant pressure, and that’s the difference between a lift and an elevator.

Q: Where in a house can they be installed?

A: These elevators used to be an eyesore, they used to put them in the back room…tucked away somewhere so you didn’t see them. This brand, a European brand, is very appealing to the eye, so we put them in the living room. We put them somewhere people can see them, and it’s not an eyesore. The cost is half the price of a true elevator.

Q: What’s the price range?

A: There are different models, but basically between $27,000 and $32,000.

Q: Do you also install chair lifts?

A: Yes, we do. Our company covers all facets of a (home)n modification for an elderly person.

Q: How much do chair lifts cost?

A: Those run between $4,000 and up to $10,000. If it’s a curved one, it’s over $10,000, with a straight one being between $3,000 and $4,000.

Q: Do younger clients request walk-in tubs?

A: We get those for a lot for people who are very active, who play sports. They want to have a full massage but sitting down versus lying down in a tub. Sit-in, walk-in tubs are perfect because you get jets all through your calves, quads, lower and upper back. And they are heated, so they work out really well.

Q: How much do these tubs cost?

A: We offer two types. If it’s just a soaking tub, it’s between $6,000 and $7,000. One with all the jets and all the whistles costs between $10,000 and $12,000 installed.

Q: Do you offer discounts to veterans?

A: We’re certified to work with the VA. We cover several grants that they hand out. We do give veterans and first responders a 10% discount.
