Melissa Hammond gut-renovated most rooms in her client’s 1911 Colonial in Arlington Heights, but still left the bones of the entrance entry and dwelling space intact. “The architectural elements of the bench and mantel enable us protect the home’s character,” the designer suggests. She did, having said that, update the area with new home furniture and finishes, starting up with a wealthy, darkish brown flooring stain.
