We have all been spending an increased amount at home, and there is no shame in wanting to make the most of our WFH set up, or tick off those DIY jobs that have been on our to-do list for a long, long time.

While some may have been touching up the paint work, others have been in full decoration mode and painting feature walls, or changing the colour scheme around the whole home.

However, others may have turned to changing the furniture instead, and dabbled in upholstery or varnishing chairs, tables, and even flooring, to inject a new lease of life into the lounge, kitchen, or bedrooms.

But a drill and putting up new shelves isn’t for everyone, and subtle changes such as adding accessories, and decorations, in the form of plants, prints, throws and cushions.

Whether you fancy learning a new skill in the meantime, such as knitting or floristry, when you are adding the finishing touches to a room or home, or would rather just assemble your accessories for an instant makeover.

We have found a selection of items to help you on your interior journey, and what you need to create the desired look.

A statement wall

Whether you are painting all the walls in one bold colour, selecting one wall as a feature wall, or even trialling the half painted look, giving a room a lick of paint can often bring a new lease of life to the area and home entirely.

But why stop there? While painting walls is often the obvious choice, you can also choose to paint furniture, even the cupboards, which will save the cost of splashing out for an entirely new kitchen. However, make sure you pick the right paint that will stick to the surface.

Update existing upholstery

Recycle existing furniture by upholstering it, sanding down wooden chairs, and trying a new varnish, is also favourable. (Getty Images)

Buying brand new furniture can be costly, but also challenging to find a sofa set to fit your room, especially in smaller areas. But just because you may be fed up of your current furniture, or tables and chairs, doesn’t mean you have to get rid of them entirely – oh no.

Furniture upholstery, whether you do yourself or get a professional to do, can make all the difference. Whether you want to chain your fabric four-piece to leather, or make that wooden chest of drawers a little more vintage, there are tonnes of ways to achieve the perfect look.

Adding finishing touches to your home is all the fun, regardless if you are in a flat, house, or renting a room, as it instantly makes the place feel like it truly is your own.

Accessories can come in the shape of prints, artwork, as well as lamps, cushions, throws, mirrors – the lot. And you don’t have to break the bank to add these to your home.

Get arty

Whether you are putting your own art or photography to the skills or buying prints, adding fun slogans, paintings or graphics instantly make for a talking point when you have guests over, and add a bit of your personality to a room. (Getty Images)

Getting creative is always fun, whether it is for adults or children, especially during lockdown. While some may have experimented with calligraphy, painting or even knitting, others may have turned their hand to photography.

If you have picked up a skill why not put it to the test and make your own slogan prints, portraits, or knit a cushion or throw for your home?

Not feeling quite so artistic? Fear not. Not On The High Street, Etsy, Desenio, Made, Anthropologie, Oliver Bonas and many more stores have artwork, prints, and knitted numbers for you to decorate your home and add a pop of colour to the place.

Mirror Mirror on the wall

Mirrors are not only helpful when you are getting ready, but work to give the illusion of a bigger space when positioned in the right place. (Getty Images)

It’s been found adding mirrors to a room or corridor not only brightens the area, but also gives the illusion the space is bigger than it actually is.

Whether you are looking for a design to pin on the wall, or prop up against a wall, there are plenty to choose from to modernise the home.

Get organised

Space, space, space. It is something we all crave, especially in the home. Whether you have a tight living area, have accumulated a lot of belongings over time, or simply outgrown your home, there are ways to rectify that.

Making space may sound like an impossibility but it’s not. Utilising every nook and cranny in your home is one thing, but adding shelves, storage, and even furniture with additional compartments to house your belongings and keep them out of reach, can work wonders and leave you feeling like you have renovated your home.
